Tips on How to Save Money on Meat
Money is tight for most families these days and finding creative ways to save money can make a big difference.
I cook a lot at home and I know the struggle of buying ingredients on a budget while still making delicious and nutritious meals. That’s why I’m here today to share my tips and tricks for saving money on meat.
With creative meal planning and smart shopping, you may be amazed by how much you can reduce your grocery bill with just a few easy steps.
1) Saving Money on Meat: Plan Your Meals
Planning your meals is an excellent way to save on meat. Meat can be one of the most expensive items in your grocery cart. One strategy is to opt for cuts of meat that are cheaper, such as chicken thighs or pork shoulder. These cuts are just as delicious when prepared correctly.
Another option is to buy larger quantities of meat when it’s on sale and freeze it for later use. When planning your meals for the week, consider meatless options like beans or tofu. This not only saves money but can also be beneficial for your health.
By planning your meals ahead of time, you can ensure that you’re making the most of your grocery budget.
Planning Meals Can Save Money on Meat
Planning meals is a great way to not only save time but also save money.
By taking the time to plan out your meals for the week or month, you can strategically purchase meat in bulk and buy it when it’s on sale. This not only reduces food waste but also helps to stretch your dollar further.
Additionally, planning your meals can prevent last-minute takeout orders or impulse buys at the grocery store. This can increase expenses considerably over time.Having a meal plan in place can make mealtime less stressful and more enjoyable. It allows you to focus on quality time with your family instead of scrambling to throw something together.
In short, taking the time to plan meals can be a smart financial and time-saving strategy for your household.
Save Money on Meat: Plan Meals Around Meat That’s on Sale or in Season
When it comes to meal planning, there are a few things to keep in mind if you’re looking to save a little money. One trick of the trade is to base your meals around meat that’s on sale or in season.
This helps you stretch your grocery budget a bit further. It also allows you to experiment with new recipes and flavor profiles. For example, if you find that chicken breasts are on sale, you could plan to use them for a few meals throughout the week. You can make roasted chicken and grilled chicken sandwiches with chicken breasts.
Or, if you notice that ground beef is in season, you could plan to incorporate it into dishes like tacos or spaghetti. By planning your meals around seasonal and sale items, you can enjoy delicious and affordable meals all year long.
Save Money on Meat: Use Meal-Planning Apps or Websites
Meal planning can be a tedious task, but thankfully technology has made it easier than ever. Nowadays, there are countless meal-planning apps and websites available to make the process a breeze.
Whether you’re trying to stick to a specific diet or simply organize your meals for the week, these resources can save you time, money, and stress.
By using a meal planning app, you can easily create and customize your meal plan. Also, they allow you to generate grocery lists, and even find new recipes to try. Many of these apps offer features like automatic grocery delivery or integration with your favorite grocery store’s shopping list.
Inspiring Savings lists lots of free apps for meal planning.
So why not take advantage of this technological convenience and save yourself some energy and time in the kitchen?
2) Save Money on Meat: Shopping Smart
Buying meat is a large chunk out of your budget. However, there are ways to shop smart and get the best deals to save money on meat.
One way to save money is by purchasing larger cuts of meat. You can purchase a whole pork loin or a whole chicken and portion them out yourself.
I buy a few London broils or some chuck roast when it’s on sale and cut them up for stew meat instead of buying stew meat cut by the butcher. This allows you to control the size of the portions and saves you money because the butcher didn’t cut it.
Another tip is to buy meat when it is on sale, and then freeze it for later use. When ground meat is on sale, I’ll buy a lot of it and freeze it or can it in smaller portions. This way, you can take advantage of the discounted price and have meat ready to cook whenever you need it.
In addition, you can stock up on meat after the holidays. I usually pick up an extra turkey or whole hams at the meat department when they are a good deal.
Consider acquiring meats that are typically cheaper. You can buy chicken or ground turkey, instead of more expensive options like beef or lamb. By implementing these strategies, you can shop smart and keep your wallet and taste buds happy.
Tips for Shopping Smart
Shopping can be enjoyable, but it can also be expensive. The good news is that there are ways to shop smarter and save money on meat in the process.
One effective strategy is to compare prices at multiple stores to get the best deals. Taking a few extra minutes to check prices online or in-store can add up to serious savings over time. Another tip is to buy in bulk whenever possible. This can be especially useful for non-perishable items that you know you will use regularly.
Another idea is to get a membership at Costco or Sam’s Club and buy your meat there. They sell meat in bulk which is cheaper than getting it at the grocery stores.
If you’re looking to save some money on meat, consider checking out marked-down meat or close-to-sell-by-date options.
It’s no secret that meat can be expensive, but these options often offer the same quality at a lower price. Plus, choosing meat that’s close to its sell-by date can help reduce food waste. Just be sure to inspect the meat thoroughly before buying it to ensure it’s still safe to eat.
Save Money on Meat: Shop at Farmers’ Markets or Local Meat Suppliers
Are you tired of buying overpriced meat at the grocery store? Look no further than your local farmers’ market or meat supplier for delicious and fresh cuts of meat at an affordable price.
By purchasing locally, you can support small businesses and often get better deals than what you would find at a chain store. Not only that, but your meat will be fresher. It hasn’t been shipped across the country or internationally.
3) Save Money on Meat: Stretching Your Meat
If you’re looking to save money on meat by cutting back on your meat intake, there are plenty of ways to stretch your meat.
One simple solution is to bulk up your meals with plenty of veggies and grains that can absorb the flavors of the meat. You can also try using less meat in dishes like stir-fries and casseroles by slicing it thinly and combining it with other protein sources like tofu or beans.
Additionally, purchasing inexpensive cuts of meat and using a slow cooker can result in delicious, tender dishes without breaking the bank.
Ideas for Stretching Meat Further
When it comes to stretching meat further, there are numerous creative ways to do so without sacrificing flavor. One such idea is to turn the meat into a flavorful seasoning that can enhance the taste of other ingredients in a dish.
A small amount of meat can go a long way in adding depth and richness to a recipe. Another option is to bulk up meat-based dishes with additional protein sources, such as lentils. This not only stretches the meat further but also adds variety to your meals.
Lastly, consider using leftover meat in creative ways, such as in stir-fries or salads, where the meat is mixed in with other ingredients.
Using Meat in Soups, Stews, or Stir-Fries
Soups, stews, and stir-fries are all great options for incorporating meat.
When combined with other ingredients, such as vegetables and grains, meat can not only stretch a meal, but it can also add flavor and nutrients. Soups and stews are particularly great for using tougher cuts of meat that benefit from low and slow cooking. Stir-fries are perfect for using up leftover meat from a previous meal.
How to Stretch Meat in Different Ways
Meat can be a delicious and versatile ingredient that adds flavor and protein to any meal. However, it can also be expensive and may not always fit within a tight budget.
Luckily, there are many recipes available that show how to stretch meat in different ways to make it go further. From tacos made with ground beef or turkey, to meat stews that incorporate beans and vegetables, there is no shortage of creative and tasty ways to make the most out of your meat.
Save Money on Meat: Slice Your Own Lunch Meat
Don’t buy lunch meat! Instead, slicing your own lunch meat will save money on your grocery bill.
Pre-packaged deli meats can be significantly more expensive than buying a larger cut of meat and slicing it yourself. Plus, you can customize the thickness of your slices to your liking.
You’ll need a sharp knife and some patience or you can invest in a meat slicer. Make sure to store your sliced meat properly in the fridge or freezer to maintain freshness.
4) Save Money on Meat: Substitute with Cheaper Cuts of Meat
Finding substitutes for expensive cuts of meat is a great way to save money on meat while still enjoying delicious meals. Although the cheap cuts may require more preparation, their flavor, and tenderness can be improved with the right techniques.
Consider braising or slow-cooking tougher cuts like chuck or shoulder, which can bring out their natural flavors and make them fork-tender. Another option is marinating, which can tenderize tougher cuts and add extra flavor.
Some Inexpensive Cuts of Meat Can be Just as Flavorful and Nutritious as More Expensive Cuts
Contrary to popular belief, you don’t always have to shell out money for expensive cuts of meat to enjoy a rich and nutritious meal. Some of the cheap cuts of meat can be just as flavorful and satisfying as their more expensive counterparts.
Cuts like chuck, flank, and shoulder are perfect for slow cooking or braising methods, which can help tenderize the meat and infuse it with all kinds of delicious flavors. Additionally, these cuts tend to have more marbling and connective tissue, which can give them a richer and more succulent texture.
Examples of Inexpensive Cuts and How to Cook Them
When it comes to meat, cheaper cuts can sometimes feel intimidating to cook. However, with the right cooking techniques, these cuts can become just as flavorful and tender as their more expensive counterparts.
Examples of cuts of meat that are more inexpensive include top round, flank or skirt steak, and brisket. Top round can be turned into a delicious roast by slow cooking it in the oven with broth and vegetables.
Flank or skirt steak can be marinated and grilled for tacos or fajitas. Brisket can be slow-cooked in the oven or a crockpot, resulting in fall-apart tender meat perfect for sandwiches or served over mashed potatoes.
Don’t be afraid to experiment and try out new recipes with these affordable cuts, as they can be just as delicious as any high-end item.
Experiment with Different Cuts of Meat to Find New Favorites
If you’re someone who always sticks to the same cuts of meat, you might be missing out on some delicious new favorites. By experimenting with different cuts, you open yourself up to new flavors and textures that can elevate your meals to a whole new level.
Perhaps you’ve always stuck with chicken breast, but have you tried the juicy and flavorful dark meat of chicken thighs? Or maybe you’ve never ventured beyond filet mignon, but have you tasted the rich and tender marbling of a ribeye? Don’t be afraid to switch things up and try something new.
5) Save Money on Meat: Obtaining Meat From a Local Farmer
If you’re looking to save some money on groceries, consider obtaining meat from a farmer instead of the grocery stores. While it may require a little extra effort on your part to find a farmer in your area, the payoff can be significant.
Not only are locally sourced meats often fresher and tastier than their supermarket counterparts, but they can also be less expensive. You can source grass-fed beef from local farmers, an option not always available at regular grocery stores.
Grass-fed beef is considered to be healthier than grain-fed beef, as it has a higher concentration of nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and antioxidants.
By cutting out the middleman and buying directly from the farmer, you may be able to get high-quality meat at a lower price. Plus, you’ll be supporting small-scale agriculture and helping to strengthen your local economy.
When Getting Meat From a Farmer: be Prepared to Buy in Bulk
If you’re someone who values the quality and purity of the food you consume, then getting meat from a farmer is an excellent choice. Local farmers often raise meat without any antibiotics, hormones, or other synthetic substances, unlike extensively processed meats which can contain additives and preservatives.
This means that you can be more confident that the meat you’re consuming is not only fresh and delicious but also free from potentially harmful additives.
You can get the meat of a whole cow, but if that’s too much, many local farms also offer the option of buying half a cow or a quarter cow. This can be a cost-effective option if you have the freezer space to store it. When buying a larger quantity, you can often work with the farmer to customize the cuts and packaging to your liking.
A frequently asked question is how much hamburger you get when buying the meat of a whole cow from a farmer. You get about 242 pounds of hamburger from an average size animal, according to Tri-State Livestock News.
Farmers often use more traditional methods for raising their animals, such as allowing them to graze on pasture and providing them with a natural diet. This can result in meat that is more flavorful and nutrient-dense compared to factory-farmed meat.
Since you’re buying directly from the farmer, you can ask questions and learn more about how the animals were raised and processed.
Coordinate with a Local Butcher Shop
Another benefit of obtaining meat from a local farmer is that it can allow you to work with a local butcher shop. A skilled butcher can help you get the most out of your meat by suggesting different cuts and cooking methods, as well as providing custom processing and packaging options.
By building a relationship with your local butcher, you can ensure that your meat is prepared to your specifications and that you’re getting the best possible quality. This partnership between farmers and butchers is also important for supporting small businesses and keeping money in the local economy.
Getting Meat from a Farmer Supports Your Local Community
If you’re looking to make a more conscious choice about where you get your meat, consider buying from a farmer. Not only will you likely be getting a higher quality product, but you’ll also be supporting your local community.
Buying from a small-scale producer helps keep money in the local economy, and it allows you to develop a relationship with the person who raised the animal you’re consuming. Plus, you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing exactly where your food came from which can be a huge advantage over grocery store options.
Plan for How to Store and Use the Meat You Buy From a Local Farm
When it comes to purchasing meat from a farmer, it’s important to have a plan in place for storing and using it to ensure that it stays fresh and safe to eat. Ideally, it’s best to have a dedicated space in your freezer or a separate chest freezer to store your meat and to use it within a certain timeframe to prevent any spoilage.
You may also want to consider investing in a vacuum sealer to help extend the shelf life of your meat. When it comes to using meat, it’s important to follow safe cooking practices to ensure that it’s fully cooked and safe to eat.
6) Save Money on Meat: DIY Meat
Another option for those looking to save money on meat is to raise your own animals to produce your own meat. While this may not be feasible for everyone, it can be a rewarding and cost-effective way to ensure a steady supply of high-quality meat.
By producing your own meat, you have complete control over the animals’ diet, living conditions, and processing methods. This means you can be sure that the meat you’re consuming is free from any unwanted additives or preservatives.
There are some upfront costs associated with raising animals, such as building or buying a coop or barn. Over time the investment can pay off in the form of cheaper and more delicious meat.
I raised 80 meat chickens last year, which allowed me to stock up on a large amount of frozen chicken that my family and I could use for multiple meals. I divided the chickens into different cuts – some I froze whole, while others I cut up into legs, thighs, quarters, wings, and even boneless, skinless chicken breasts.
To minimize waste, I also made use of the chicken backs by turning them into broth, which I canned for future use. Overall, raising my own meat chickens not only provided me with a cost-effective way to get high-quality chicken, but it also allowed me to make the most of each chicken by using every part possible.

One classic dish that comes to mind is lentil soup, which is not only hearty and packed with protein but can be flavored with a variety of spices and vegetables to suit your taste. Another great option is vegetable stir-fry, which takes advantage of the natural crunch and flavor of fresh produce. And for a more carb-heavy meal, pasta with marinara sauce is a versatile dish that can be customized with your favorite vegetables or proteins.
No matter what your preferences are, there are many delicious vegetarian meals out there that are sure to keep you feeling full and satisfied.
Try Meatless Mondays or Another Meatless Day Each Week

Just an added thought. In NY (my former home), a friend and I would split a half cow occasionally. I had never considered that the cost to keep it frozen until needed was so very high. Here in Florida now, electricity is only about 2/3 of NY prices and meats are cheaper in general. Never should have stayed there so long.
I escaped before you did! I might not be enjoying the heat of Florida, but rather the cool and dry (and cold in winter) of Montana, but very happy where we are now.
